Helping Menopause Symptoms with Pocca Poca Spa

Menopause and perimenopause is not something you need to fight. Often, we see hot flashes, irritability and restless sleep as the enemy, and we try to fight them. But, the symptoms are a part of something bigger, and are not themselves, the enemy. What we truly need to pay attention to, is the daily tension that has kept our mind and body guarded, tight, and exhausted for years.

You push yourself too hard, always doing things for someone else. Always telling yourself “I have to”, or “I should”. Have you been quietly pushing yourself beyond your limits? You hold in the words you wanted to say, the things you wanted to do. Have you been keeping your emotions inside for too long? You think, you worry, you always try to figure everything out. Has your mind forgotten how to rest?

"Ganban-yoku has helped me regulate my hot flashes and I sleep better after, too. It's been so nice to sleep well and feel like myself again. When I had bad bloating and stomach pain the night before, coming to Ganban-yoku really helped the uncomfortable feeling go away." — Pocca Poca's Member

Simple tips to help menopause symptoms

Often, those experiencing perimenopause and menopause feel that they need to do more, learn more, and buy more to fight off hot flashes, irritability and fatigue. Sometimes, the key is doing less, not more. It is about learning how to release, restore and allow yourself to do less.

What has been keeping your mind and body so tense? Learning to regulate and let go of that tension may be one of the most important keys to not being controlled by menopause symptoms

From perimenopause onward, your body needs something different. Instead of constantly staying in “activity and productivity mode”, it becomes important to consciously create more time for “rest and recovery mode”

Here are some tips to do more for yourself, by doing less:

  • Gently warm your belly and lower abdomen: In traditional Eastern medicine, it is widely practiced to apply gentle warmth to your abdomen or drinking warm water and herbal teas. This helps to encourage blood circulation and support the Kidneys from declining energy. It is understood that the aging of kidneys can result in less cooling available to balance the rest of the body, resulting in hot flashes, night sweats, and disturbed sleep. However, gently warming your organs with intention can prevent the change in your body’s energy from manifesting as upper-body symptoms.

    • We recommend using a hot water bottle, Ganban-yoku, or a heat pack.

  • Take slow, deep breaths into your lower abdomen: In Japanese wellness practices, this area is known as the “Tanden”. Tanden breathing centres focus and energy to your core, drawing oxygen into the lungs and triggering the parasympathetic nervous system which activates the body’s relaxation system.

    • Practicing deep breathing into your lower abdomen at home or on the Ganban-yoku stones helps to provide the grounding mindfulness that is so easy to lose hold of when dealing with every day stressors and compounding menopause symptoms.

  • Gently stretch your hips and pelvic area to release tension: Many women carry stress in their hips, and it can be shocking how much lighter you can feel after releasing the built up tightness in the pelvic area.

    • We recommend finding a simple stretch that feels good for you. Many clients enjoy the warmth of the Ganban-yoku stones while they gently open up the hips, as the heat of the room and volcanic stones helps turn the stretching into a meditative experience.

  • Intentionally create time to do nothing: this one is hard. So often, we feel that there is so much to get done, so much to take care of, and if we have a spare moment we try to fill it with the next productive activity. Sometimes, doing nothing, is doing plenty for yourself. This doesn’t mean you have to sleep, but simply lying down can be enough. This doesn’t mean you have to journal, or read, but sitting with your own thoughts with no time limit can be enough. Our bodies are changing, and our minds and bodies simply need some time to recover.

Pushing too hard and holding everything in can slowly deplete your energy, and your body’s ability to find balance becomes harder and harder.

Softening your body and mind in a way that feels good to you can be even more important for your health, comfort and overall well-being than checking off everything from your never-ending to-do list. Those things will get done, and taking care of yourself first can make the process less overwhelming, and more enjoyable.
