Why Do I Feel Different After 40?
Maybe nothing dramatic happened.
You are still working.
Still raising your family.
Still taking care of everyone.
Still doing most of the things you did ten years ago.
But somehow…
your body feels different.
You don't recover as quickly.
Stress seems to stay in your body longer.
Your shoulders are tighter.
Sleep may not feel as restorative.
You may feel exhausted even after you have technically “rested.”
Your body temperature may feel unpredictable.
Your mood may change more easily.
And sometimes you look at yourself and wonder:
What happened? Why do I suddenly feel so different?
If you are somewhere in your 40s, you are definitely not the only person asking this question.
For many people, this is the stage when the body starts asking for a different kind of care.
Your 40s Are Not Just Your 30s With Another Birthday
We sometimes expect our bodies to continue functioning exactly the same way forever.
But the body changes throughout every stage of life.
For women, the 40s can be especially noticeable because this is often when
perimenopause begins.
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause.
Hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can become more variable during
this time.
And because hormones interact with many systems in the body, the changes do not always
show up as one obvious symptom.
They can show up in many different ways.
You may experience changes in:
sleep
energy
menstrual cycles
body temperature
concentration
mood
muscle recovery
headaches
joint comfort
skin
weight distribution
stress tolerance
And every woman's experience is different.
Some women barely notice the transition.
Others suddenly feel like they are living in a body they don't completely recognize.
“But I Used to Be Able to Handle This.”
I hear variations of this feeling from women or men all the time.
“I used to be able to work all day and still have energy.”
“I never used to need this much sleep.”
“My shoulders never used to stay this tight.”
“I don't understand why I'm suddenly so tired.”
One of the hardest parts of entering our 40s is that mentally, we may still expect ourselves
to operate at exactly the same pace.
So instead of changing our lifestyle, we sometimes push even harder.
More coffee.
More work.
More exercise.
More responsibility.
And less recovery.
But your body may actually be asking for the opposite.
More recovery.

Stress Also Feels Different After 40
Hormones aren't the only part of the story.
Look at what many people are carrying by their 40s.
Children.
Teenagers.
A career.
A business.
A marriage.
A household.
Financial responsibilities.
Aging parents.
And sometimes all of these things at the same time.
We become very good at functioning under pressure.
The problem is that functioning is not the same as recovering.
You can still answer emails.
You can still go to work.
You can still make dinner.
You can still drive everyone where they need to go.
But your nervous system may never get a real opportunity to switch off.
Sometimes the question isn't:
“Why can't my body handle stress anymore?”
The better question may be:
“When was the last time I actually gave my body enough time to recover from it?”
I Started Understanding This Differently Because of My Mother
This is very personal for me.
I lost my mother to cancer during her menopause years.
She was an incredibly strong woman.
But she was also someone who kept going.
She took care of everybody.
Rest could always wait.
She could always push a little longer.
I would never say that lack of rest caused her illness.
But losing her during this stage of her life completely changed the way I think about women and self-care.
It made me realize how easily women can spend decades caring for everyone else and barely leave any room for themselves.
That experience became part of the reason I created Pocca Poca Spa in Winnipeg.
I wanted to create the kind of place I wish my mother had given herself permission to use.
A place where we don't have to perform.
Don't have to talk.
Don't have to take care of anyone.
We can simply be warm.
Quiet.
And still.

Why Warmth Became So Important to Pocca Poca
Growing up with Japanese wellness traditions also influenced the way I think about caring for the body.
In Japanese culture, warmth has long been connected with comfort and restoration.
Think about an onsen, a warm bath, hot tea, or simply keeping the body protected from cold.
At Pocca Poca, this philosophy is at the centre of our Ganban-yoku Japanese stone spa experience.
Ganban-yoku allows you to lie on gently heated mineral stone beds while wearing
comfortable kimono clothing.
There is nothing you have to accomplish.
You simply lie down.
Warm up.
Breathe.
Rest.
For people who spend most of their day doing something for someone else, that simplicity
can be surprisingly powerful.
Traditional Eastern Medicine Looks at the 40s Differently Too
Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese Kampo have their own historical ways of
describing the stages of a human life.
These traditions often view midlife not simply as something “going wrong,” but as a time
when the body's reserves and rhythms begin changing.
That does not replace modern medical care, hormone assessment, or conversations with
your healthcare provider.
But I like one idea that comes from these traditions:
As we move through different stages of life, we shouldn't expect to care for our bodies exactly the same way forever.
What supported you at 25 may not be enough at 45.
And that isn't failure.
It is simply a different stage.
Maybe Your Body Isn't Asking You to Do More
This is the part I wish more women and men heard.
When something feels different after 40, our first instinct is often:
What supplement should I take?
What diet should I start?
Should I exercise harder?
How can I fix myself?
But occasionally the answer may be much simpler.
Your body may be asking:
Can I have more sleep?
Can I have warmth?
Can I have less stimulation?
Can I have an hour when nobody needs anything from me?
Can we recover before we push again?
Self-care doesn't solve every symptom of perimenopause or menopause.
And persistent or concerning symptoms should always be discussed with a qualified
healthcare professional.
But regular recovery is still an important part of taking care of yourself.
The Biggest Mistake I See Women Make
We wait until we are completely exhausted.
Then we book something.
A massage.
A spa day.
A weekend away.
We feel better.
And then we immediately go back to exactly the same schedule.
Three months later, we are exhausted again.
This is why my philosophy at Pocca Poca has gradually changed.
I don't want self-care to be something women use only when they are already depleted.
I want it to become part of the way they live.
Especially after 40.

If Your Body Has Been Asking You to Stop, Start Here
If you have never experienced Pocca Poca, I recommend beginning with our Ultimate Japanese Detox Package.
It is designed to give you more than a standard massage appointment.
You experience our Japanese Ganban-yoku stone beds, a Head & Shoulders or Foot treatment, and Japanese Shiatsu as part of one extended Pocca Poca experience.
Why do I recommend the full experience?
Because many poeple arrive carrying the energy of their entire day.
Work.
Driving.
Phones.
Emails.
Children.
Responsibilities.
Going straight from that into a massage can sometimes feel like your mind has not even arrived yet.
Ganban-yoku gives you time to transition.
To warm.
To become quiet.
To allow yourself to stop.
Then your treatment becomes part of a much deeper period of rest.
